What is Rhassoul (Ghassoul)?

Rhassoul clay is an ancient clay found deep beneath the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Rhassoul comes from the Arabic word ‘rassala’ meaning ‘washing’.

It was used by the nobility in ancient Rome and Egypt because it naturally extracts oil and debris from the hair and skin. Today, Rhassoul clay is a favourite with the finest spas and resorts worldwide.

Rhassoul is 100% natural, ecological, biodegradable and economic! It contains higher percentages of silica, magnesium, potassium, calcium and other trace minerals than other clays. These minerals make the clay highly detoxifying as they can actually exchange themselves for toxic compounds like metals in the skin. The clay not only works to remove impurities from your skin; it also replaces them with nourishing trace minerals. The clay’s high level of ion exchange makes it ideal for toning and enriching the skin.

• Reduces dryness
• Reduces flakiness
• Improves skin clarity
• Improves skin elasticity/firmness
• Improves skin texture
• Removes surface oil and oil from inside and around clogged pores
• Removes dead skin layers, resulting in a general smoothing of the surface of the skin

Uses

Always mix clay into a small amount of water or rose water and leave to hydrate and activate for about 10 minutes. Use a non-metallic bowl and spoon. Add more water or powder if needed to achieve the right consistency for the intended use. For most uses, a yoghurt-like consistency is ideal.

Rhassoul Face/Body Mask

Mix one to two teaspoons of Rhassoul clay as described above. To make a creamy face mask, wash face first, then apply mask. Leave for about 5 to 10 minutes. For very dry or sensitive skin do not let the mask dry out but put a moistened cloth over the face to keep it damp. If the skin looks red after the first application, don’t worry! This is just a detox symptom and a good sign! Apply the mask once a week. For best results, follow with Oriana Argan oil.

Rhassoul Face/Body Wash

Blend some clay with water to form a similar mixture as liquid soap. Apply to the wet face/body, avoiding the eye area. Massage in for a few minutes. Rinse thoroughly. For best results, follow with Oriana Argan oil.

Rhassoul Hair Wash and Conditioner

Use one to two tablespoons for short hair and double amount for long hair. The consistency of the mixture should be liquid, similar to a shampoo gel for using on the hair. Rhassoul does not form a lather, but it will have a ‘soapy’ feel to it. Wet the hair, then massage the clay-water mix into the scalp. Do not rub the clay into the hair shaft but massage it gently into the scalp. For long hair, comb the Rhassoul along the shaft of the hair. Leave for a few minutes to work. Rinse thoroughly, massaging the scalp to ensure complete removal. If possible, allow to dry naturally. For very dry hair, apply one or two drops of Argan oil into the hair tips.

Suggested Additional Ingredients for Hair and Skin Treatments

Once you have become accustomed to the way Rhassoul clay works alone for your skin and hair, you might wish to incorporate additional ingredients for possible increased benefits. Everyone’s hair and skin are different, so it will be fun discovering what works best for you.

Generally, we recommend using bottled spring water to mix your Rhassoul paste – albeit you will probably be using tap water to rinse it off!

A teaspoon of organic full-fat yoghurt and/or honey added to a Rhassoul face paste will brighten and hydrate the skin.

For dry skin, add one or two teaspoons of good quality organic vegetable oil such as Argan oil, olive oil, jojoba, avocado or macadamia nut oil. In Morocco, Argan oil is always added to Rhassoul for its benefits to skin and hair.

Use warm green tea instead of plain water to mix the Rhassoul paste. Green tea is renowned for its antioxidant properties and is helpful for sun-damaged skin and hair.
